Alberto Giudiceandrea Rome, Italy M.D. Dr. Alberto Giudiceandrea is a European Board certified general and vascular surgeon who received his surgical training in the UK. He has more than 13 years experience in sympathectomies having moved from the open method of lumbar sympathectomies done for vascular disorders to thoracoscopic procedure with clip instead of cutting for HH and FB. He is a consultant surgeon in Brescia and in Rome (Italy), were he is performing more than 150 bilateral procedure a year. He has an outstanding scientific interest on the functional disorder caused by increased sympathetic activity and in sympathetic chain surgery. He is member of he the International Society for Sympathetic Surgery.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

1. Investigation on endothelial cell seeding of a prosthetic graft under physiological shears stress conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of shear stresses similar to that found under physiological conditions in the femoral artery on optimal seeded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and compliant polyurethane (CPU) grafts over a period of 6 hours. This was done in a flow model and using gamma camera as imaging technique.
2. Haemodynamic assessment of vascular grafts. Together with Dr Alex Seifalian we have developed and validated a new digital x-ray angiographic technique to assess characteristic of vascular graft such as compliance in vitro and in vivo. We have established the compliance of the human arteries and assessed the compliance of different prosthetic grafts. We are in the process of developing a new compliante vascular graft for clinical application.

TEACHING, MANAGMENTAND AUDIT EXPERIENCE

As a registrar i regularly presented interesting case discussions, and lectures on theory of current surgical practices. At Royal Free Hospital I have continued clinical teaching for undergraduate students. I have regularly lectured to the students on fundamentals of vascular surgery. During my time at the Royal free I have participated and presented in audit meetings.
